위댄스의 새 음반 [Dance Pop]을 듣는다. 안도감을 느낀다. 그들은 여전히 그 자리에 있다. 예의 그 모습대로, 멋대로 춤추고 있다. 거칠고 울림이 많은 기타도, 뭔가에 취한 듯 읊조렸다 불렀다 하는 보컬도, 다소 조악하고 반복적인 드럼 비트도 그대로다. 달라진 점이 있다면 오히려 예전보다 더 멋대로라는 것이다. 더블 타이틀곡 중 하나인 <City Punk>의 뮤직비디오에서, 그들은 서울의 이곳저곳을 누빈다. 누구에게나 익숙한 지하철역, 횡단보도, 주택가, 청계천변 등은 그들의 존재만으로 괴상한 댄스플로어가 된다. 나는 지금 이어폰을 귀에 꽂고 설거지를 하며 음반을 듣고 있다. 그릇과 접시와 잔이 마치 살아 움직이는 괴생명체인 것처럼 느껴진다. 그래, 이게 위댄스지! 위댄스의 음악은 이상하다. 그리고 불친절하다. 그들의 음악을 처음 접하는 이들이라면 당혹감을 느낄지 모른다. 하지만 수년을 하루같이 그 불친절함을 끈덕지게 밀어붙이는 그들의 일관성이 내게는 오히려 친절하게 느껴진다. 정신없이 변하는 세상에서 한결같이 제멋대로인 그들의 음악은 오히려 휴식을 선물한다. "이 아이러니는 나를 가만두지 않(<아이러니즘> 중에서)"는다. 다시 한번 다 내려놓고 춤을 추게 만든다.

지난 주말에 자전거를 타고 동부 5고개에 갔어요. 5개의 고개마다 다른 성격의 고난. 초행자에게는 쉽지 않은 코스에요. 다섯 개 중 제일 처음으로 만나게 되는 벗고개. 시작부터 하늘로 높게 치솟은 길이에요. 상당히 가파른 경사라서 멀찌감치에서 바라보기만 해도 겁을 집어먹게 되더라고요. ‘지금 나는 그냥 아무것도 아닌 거다.’ 고개 앞에서 저절로 겸손해지는 자세. ‘어떻게 되는지 한번 보자.’ 호기심 하나 믿고 가죠. 죽을 만큼 힘든 경사를 한 페달 한 페달 묵묵히 밟아 갑니다. 비 오는 듯 흐르는 땀이나 움푹 팬 노면, 가냘픈 자전거를 위협하는 야속한 자동차도 모두 관심 밖으로 사라지고 극단적으로 단순해지는 감각. ‘더는 무리야~’라고 소리 지르는 근육들과 터질 것 같은 숨소리만이 오직 세상의 전부.

얼떨결에 첫 번째 고개의 정상에 도착해서 ‘베토벤 교향곡 9번’을 들었습니다. 하늘을 날것처럼 기분이 좋아졌어요. 이 기분을 타고 이제 내려가야죠. 내리막은 시원하고 기분 좋고 아주 무섭습니다. 하늘을 날아버릴 것 같은 공포가 엄습합니다.

서후고개(두 번째 고개), 명달리(세 번째 고개) 정상에서 휴식하며 위댄스의 '그저 하고 싶다는’, Ride의 ‘Vapour Trail’을 들었습니다. 네 번째 고개 중미산은 달리는 길 내내 Pavement의 ‘Terror Twilight’ 앨범을 들었어요. 환상적인 나뭇잎 그늘을 우리 몸에 얹어 주었어요. 감동하면서 달리니까 하나도 힘들지 않은 것 같은 착각에 빠져들어요. 중미산을 넘어와서 얼음이 가득 담긴 아메리카노를 마시고 몸을 풀며 My Bloody Valentaine의 ‘Only Shallow’를 들었습니다. 핏속으로 아메리카노와 노이즈가 빠르게 흡수됩니다. 대망의 마지막 고개인 유명산 정상. 차 소리와 바람 소리 속에서 우리는 포옹과 하이파이브를 했습니다.

이렇게 동부 5고개를 넘은 이야기를 적어봤습니다. 재미있게 읽으셨는지 모르겠네요. 이날 하루 동안 5개의 고개를 넘은 경험은 마치 응축해 놓은 삶의 단편처럼 느껴집니다. 음악을 들으며 휴식을 취하고 다시 오르막을 오르고 내리막으로 쏟아지고를 반복하며 나뭇잎의 그림자 속을 천천히 달리는 시간 속에 음악은 함께 흐르고 있었습니다. 노래가 기분을 좋게 하고 다시 투지를 다지게 하고 ‘내가 지금 뭘 하고 있나’ 하는 복잡한 심경 속으로 우리를 초대하면 저항 없이 빨려 들어갔습니다. 앨범 소개를 한답시고 어째서 자전거 잡지에나 보내야 할 것 같은 글을 쓰고 있냐고 하는 사람도 있겠지만 눈치가 빠른 사람이라면 이미 제가 하려는 말의 의도를 눈치채고 있을지도 모르겠습니다.

앨범 [DANCE POP]을 설명할 수 있는 방법은 각도에 따라서 여러 가지로 가능하겠죠. 어떤 한 가지 면을 쓰게 되면 어쩐지 아쉬움이 남을 것 같아서 글로 적는다는 것이 쉽지 않아요. 우리가 만드는 노래는 어떠한 뚜렷한 목적이나 기준을 가지고 시작되는 것이 아닐 때가 많아요. 상품을 만드는 것과는 다른 영역인 게 분명하죠. 아니면 그냥 너무 잘하려고 해서 일까요.

11곡의 노래가 한 장의 앨범에 소중하게 담겨서 세상에 나왔어요. 휴식을 취할 때나 자전거를 타고 거리를 걸으면서 지하철 안에서 당신의 시간과 이 노래들이 정답게 깍지 끼고 함께 흐르는 것을 상상해봅니다. 음악은 어떤 상황 속에서든 우리의 기분을 바꿔버리는 마법을 부립니다.

English Translation

Last weekend, we went to ride the ‘East Five’ passes on our bicycles. Each of the five passes has a different personality and different hardships. It's not an easy course for a beginner. The first of the five hills you come across is called the ‘Beotgogae’. The road seems to sore high into the sky right from the start. It's a steep slope, I felt scared even looking at it from afar. The slope itself made me feel modist like I was ‘just nothing’ at that moment. Let's see what happens. Let's trust our curiosity. I'm turning the pedals so hard I might die. I am sweating so much it might as well be raining. The undulating road and vulgar cars that threaten my slender bicycle all disappear from my thoughts. The only things in the world are my screaming muscles and the bursting lungs.

Somehow I made it to the top of the first hill where I listened to Beethoven's Symphony No.9. I felt so good that I could fly in the sky, the ride down the other side felt amazing. The downhill was cool and pleasant, but very scary. The kind of fear that might blow up at any moment.

While I took a rest at the summit of the second and third passes I listened to "Just Want To Do It" (from our new album) and Ride's "Vapour Trail." On the fourth pass, Jungmi Mountain I listened to the 'Terror Twilight’ album by Pavement during the ride. It was as if the music was shading me from the sun like the leaves on the trees. I was so moved that I felt like I was not tired at all. At the top of Jungmisan I drank an iced americano and listened to My Bloody Valentine's 'Only Shallow'. Both the americano and music were quickly absorbed into my blood and I was off again. Heading towards the summit of Mt.Yeong, the last hill of the ride. On the way up we listened to only the sound of cars and the wind, we hugged and high-fived at the top.

So I wrote down a story about riding my bike over the five eastern passes. I hope you enjoyed it. The experience of crossing five passes in one day day feels like a condensed story of life. While listening to music, we took a rest, climbed up a mountain and went down the other side again and then cruised along in the shade of the leaves on the trees. The music I was listening to made me feel good, strengthened my fighting spirit, and invited me into the complex thought process of "What am I doing now?". Some people might be wondering why I'm writing an album bio that seems like an article that should appear in a bicycle magazine, but if you're a perceptive person I think you will know what I am trying to say.

There are many different ways to explain the album DANCE POP, depending on the angle you look at it from. It's not easy to write down just one side because I think it'll leave some regrets. The songs we make often don't start with any distinct purpose or fixed idea. It is clearly a bit different from making a standard product Or is it just trying to be too good?

There are 11 precious songs on the album that we are releasing into the world. My hope is that that you all enjoy listening to our album in your personal time when you are riding a bike, walking down the street, taking the subway. Music is the magic that can change our mood in any situation.

위댄스의 2020년 새 앨범 [DANCE POP]

위댄스는 어디에 딱 집어넣기가 쉽지 않은 밴드이다. 일렉트로닉 음악이라고 하기엔 마치 록밴드처럼 일렉기타가 차지하는 비중이 크고 락 밴드라고 하기엔 2인조의 구성으로 미리 계획해 둔 인스트루먼트 트랙의 도움을 받는다. 댄스 음악이라고 하기엔 디스토션과 퍼즈가 엉켜있고 락음악이라고만 하기에도 뭔가 미묘하다.

우리는 ‘올드스쿨’이라 할 수 있는 방식을 소중히 생각한다. 그렇지만 그것은 레트로에 대한 지향이라기보다는 시퀀싱과 계속해서 업데이트되는 새로운 장비를 이용한 음악 제작방식의 변화의 와중에서도 기존의 방식에서의 소중한 외침 같은 것을 무시하지 않으려고 하는 쪽에 가깝다.

이를테면 1번 트랙 '눈에 뵈는 게 없어'의 경우 위보Wevo는 한나절을 옥상의 테라스에 앉아서 지는 석양을 보면서 예리해져갔고 끓어오르는 감정을 바라보며 '어느새 게슴츠레해지는 눈동자, 충혈하기는 커녕, 점점 더 예리해지기만 하는'이라는 가사를 종이 위에 적었다.

우리는 그런 것들을 음악으로 펼쳐 보이고 싶었다. 가슴속에 아직 남아있는 삶을 향해 끓어오르는 감정들. 이 앨범에 전체적으로 흐르고 있는 감정은 그런 것이다. 그저 하고 싶어서 처음이자 마지막 비행을 감행한 skyking과 같은 그런것(그저 하고 싶다는). 몸 사리고 눈치 보며 모든 게 너무 조심스러워져서 말 한마디 쉽게 내뱉지 못하는 거리에서 귀찮은 뒷수습을 무릅쓰고서라도 쓰레기를 버리고 싶다는 욕망을 무시하지 않아 보는 것 (City Punk). ‘쿨’ 하지 않게 지친 마음을 종이 위에 적어서 친구에게 보내 보이는 그런 용기 같은 것 (종이위에).

그래서 이번 앨범에서 사운드 적으로 많이 고민했던 부분이 퍼즈기타의 사용이다. 디스토션이 아닌 퍼즈로 그 끓어오름을 소리를 내고 싶었고 더욱더 공격적이고 파괴적인 소리로 내고 싶어서 주파수 간섭에 의한 부딪치는 두음을 일부러 이용하는 주법을 개발하기도 했다. 그것은 ‘올드스쿨’이며 동시에 (적어도 내가 알기로는) 어디에서도 들어보지 못했던 사운드이다. 1번과 4번, 10번 트랙들에서 그 흔적을 찾아볼 수 있다.

위댄스가 늘 원하는 음악은 배경처럼 깔리는 음악이 아닌 폭발 하듯 앞으로 팝하고 튀어나오는 음악이다. 우리는 듣는 사람을 가만히 두질 않는 pop 적인 음악을 좋아한다. 새 앨범 [DANCE POP]은 그런 곡들을 담겨있다. 이 곡들이 사람들이 흔히 생각하는 Dance pop이든 아니든 그것은 중요하지 않다. 우리는 이 앨범을 듣는 사람이 두근두근하고 정신이 나갔으면 좋겠다. Dance pop 하면 바로 떠올려지는 그런 음악을 생각한다면 배신감을 느끼겠지만 애초에 위댄스가 지향하는 댄스음악의 위치가 이 부근 어딘가에 있다.

이것은 아이러니하게도 City 'POP' 보다는 City 'PUNK' 취향의 사람들이 반길만한 Dance pop 앨범이다.

English Translation

New Album from Wedance [DANCE POP]

It is hard to categorize Wedance into any specific genre. Calling it electronic music doesn’t really work because of the big rock band like electric guitar sound. That said, simply labelling them as rock music doesn’t work either because a lot of their music is based on pre-programmed instrumental tracks. We can’t call it dance music because the sound is tangled with distortion and fuzz.

We treasure being called ‘old-school’. However, rather than deliberately aiming for a retro sound, we decided that at the same time as using modern updated gear, we would also not ignore some of the valuable aspects of doing things the traditional way.

For example, after sitting on a rooftop terrace all day, jotting down ideas, Wevo wrote the lyrics for the first track on the album 'Stop At Nothing'. As she watched the sunset, her mind became sharper and her emotions came out, she wrote “In no time my glazed pupils, not bloodshot were getting sharper” using a simple pencil and paper.

We like to express those things through music. Emotions left in the heart that yearn for the fun things in life. The sentiment that flows through this album relates to this idea. Like the song ‘Just Want To Do It’, which is about the Skyking who ventured out on his first (and last ever) flight, just because he wanted to do it. ‘City Punk’ is about that feeling when you are out in the streets, everybody is being cautious and intimidated, making it hard to speak and act freely. There are so many things you want to do, like not ignoring those desires to play in the water fountain, and to just give it a shot. ‘On a Paper’ is about having the courage to write a letter to a friend to frankly tell them how you feel, even if it is not “cool” to do so.

We spent a lot of time thinking about the sound for this album and ended up using a lot of fuzz. We really wanted to avoid distortion as much as possible and aimed to make a more aggressive and destructive sound. As part of this, we developed a playing style that intentionally uses two notes which have conflicting frequency interference. It is Old School, and as far as I know, a new sound that no one else has played. You can hear it in tracks 1, 4, and 10.

The music Wedance has been always pursuing is explosive and in your face pop, not the gentle, played in the background type. We love music that makes our listeners move. Our new album ‘DANCEPOP’ is full of songs we love. It doesn't matter whether or not these songs are the Dance Pop that people usually think of. We just wanted to get the listeners' hearts pumping and blow their minds. You might feel betrayed if you are imagining some popular, traditional Dance Pop songs, but from the beginning, this is what we think of as dance-pop.

Ironically, this Dance Pop album will likely be enjoyed more by people who prefer City ‘PUNK’ rather than City ‘POP’.
